The Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs plays a key role in the country's integration processes: this concurrently as the national coordinator for EU integration and as chairman and member of the main bodies conducting the accession negotiations. 

The Minister ensures the communication line between the EU institutions and the Albanian negotiating structures regarding the agenda / calendar and the work and procedures during the screening process and accession negotiations. The Minister also organises and coordinates the structures’ work for preparation for screening and the negotiation process, providing for methodological guidance and oversight to the structures. 

Another key function of the MEFA Minister is to inform the Council of Ministers on screening and negotiations, to inform stakeholders and the general public. The Minister also leads political dialogue and negotiations at political level in capacity of the Head of State Delegation and oversees processes as a member of the State Committee for European Integration.
